Designated a heritage site by the State of Rio de Janeiro in 1985 for its unique landscape value, the British Cemetery's restoration project was guided by the intention to recover the spirit of the place — an environment of simplicity, serenity, and contemplation, characteristic of British funerary traditions. The proposal preserves the historic trees and original materials, respecting the memory built over time. As a contemporary gesture, we introduced vegetation over unfinished tombs and new graves, using green roof technology, establishing continuity between nature and memory. This approach reinforces the symbolic dimension of the space, fostering an atmosphere of reflection, meditation, and a sensitive encounter between the living and their ancestors.
